UoN Students Go on the Rampage, Demand for the Exit of the VC Over Introduction of ‘Dictatorial’ Laws ~Magazine Reel

University of Nairobi students went on the rampage destroying properties worth hundreds of thousands.

This happened only a month after the university was forced to close
down its operations as a result of post election chaos that erupted as soon as Babu Owino was declared the winner for a record fourth time.

The students chanted anti administration slogans demanding for the exit of the Vice chancellor
Professor Peter Mbithi.

The students who contacted the Magazine Reel News Desk said the lot was showing their displeasure with the changes allegedly imposed
on them by the administration. Students were up in arms especially against the rules barring them
from cooking in hostels.

Male students were also furious that the new rules prevented them from
visiting ladies’ hostels past 10pm. The rule which exists in almost all universities dictates that one can only visit his friend or colleague as from 10 am to 10 pm.

The angry students torched their mess last night citing oppression from administration. The group
said that the leadership of the university was keen on having them eat in the University Mess
preventing them from preparing meals in their rooms.

They said that food prepared in the Mess was lowly preferred because of quantity, quality and the price. Most said that it is cheap to prepare food inside rooms than eating in the
Mess.

During the anti Babu Owino riots, the students also lamented that the university VC was biased and keen on keeping certain students as leaders at the helm of SONU leadership. Mike Jacobs,

Babu’s political foe also supported the claims and added that the administration did not want another crop of leaders to take over the mantle because there was an ongoing corruption and nepotism within its management board.

The university’s disciplinary committee made a decision to expel 33 students including Mike Jacobs. The third year student has already taken the matter to the corridors of justice seeking a reinstatement by the judges to complete his studies.

Mike Jacobs believes that the 33 were not given a fair hearing and that they were given an opportunity to defend themselves against
claims of vandalism and destruction of properties.

In his court papers, Mike Jacobs also notes that there was not a single evidence which was produced to show that the 33 students destroyed properties as claimed by the administration.

The students have promised to cause more damage if their plight is not solved as soon as possible.

They have told the administration to
prepare for the worst in the near future. It is not yet clear what decision the administration and
management of the university will make following
the unrest.
