Helb is a financier of higher education in Kenya,whose main obligation is to disburse loans, bursaries, and scholarships to students who are orphans, from single parent families and others from poor backgrounds that are pursuing higher education in public and private universities and colleges. Here in Kenya all the top ranking universities and the upcoming ones are all beneficiaries,since this program is not restricted to only particular universities. Helb loans have enabled students have an easier university life as they are able to cater for their day to day needs. The Kenyan government cooperates with financial institution such as KCB, EQUITY,COOPERATIVE BANK for the funds to be disbursed to the students through their bank accounts
Helb places advertisements in the print media, where it invites applications for loans. Deadlines are maintained and applications received after the deadline are not proccesed.

LOAN REQUIREMENTS.
Applicants are required to have the following:
A valid bank account.
KRA pin number.
Guardian particulars.
Copy of letter of admission to the college or university.
Copies of two guarantors identity cards.
Three Coloured passport size paragraph.
APPLICATION PROCESS.
The process of loan application is done online following the procedure outline:
Log into the helb portal by following the link:helb application portal.
Click create account to create your account profile with helb.
While still logged in, go to the home page and click ‘fill the application form correctly'.
Fill in the form carefully and make sure you save each and every step.
Go back home and click the print form icon yo get your hard copy documents.
Applicants are then required to take the printed form to their local pastor, sub-chief, lawyer who will confirm information provided is accurate.
The form is then submitted to helb offices.
Government sponsored students are awarded a minimum of Ksh 35,000 and a maximum of 60,000 depending on the level of need. Doctoral students are awarded an average of ksh150,000 while masters students receive Ksh80,000. Loans for postgraduate students are announced in june and awarded on September which is the beginning of the academic year.
LOAN DISBURSEMENT.
Helb releases loan results before the new academic year starts.Students who qualify for the loans have their Personal back accounts credited before each semester begins. Those who fail to secure a loan due to issues such as inadequate information on the form and inclusion of false information are encouraged to appeal.
MANAGEMENT OF HELB LOANS.
Students who successfully secure the loans are advised to use it constructively mainly for tution, books, stationery accommodation and subsistence purposes.
REPAYMENT OF THE LOAN.
Loan repayment starts within one year of completion of studies. However, voluntary payments made before or after studies are completed is advisable so as to reduce the loan balance. The loan normally attracts an interest of 4% p. a. Loan defaulters are penalised for each month that remains unpaid a fine of not less than sh 5000.If one dies before clearing the loan ,helb can waive the loan.A certificate of clearance is afterwards given to beneficiaries who have cleared the loans.
